Overview

Autologous adipose-derived stromal vascular fraction (SVF) cells represent a heterogeneous population of cells obtained from a patient's own lipoaspirate. This fraction contains a mixture of adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs), endothelial precursor cells, pericytes, and various immune cells. When used for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis, the SVF is typically isolated at the point of care and administered via intra-articular injection. The therapeutic mechanism is primarily paracrine, where the cells secrete a variety of anti-inflammatory cytokines and growth factors that modulate the joint environment, reduce chronic inflammation, and potentially promote the regeneration or protection of articular cartilage. Clinical studies led by Michael H Carstens have evaluated this therapy in patients with Kellgren-Lawrence Grade 3 knee osteoarthritis, demonstrating long-term safety and clinical response over follow-up periods as long as ten years.
