Overview

Autologous adipose stromal vascular fraction (SVF) is a cellular product derived from a patient's own adipose tissue, typically collected via liposuction. The fraction consists of a heterogeneous mixture of cells, including mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), endothelial progenitor cells, pericytes, T regulatory cells, and macrophages. StemGenex developed a specific protocol for the intra-articular administration of this fraction to treat osteoarthritis of the knee and hip. The therapeutic approach relies on the regenerative and immunomodulatory properties of the constituent cells, which are thought to reduce inflammation and promote tissue repair within the joint environment through paracrine signaling. However, the development of this therapy by StemGenex was significantly impacted by regulatory actions from the FDA, which issued a warning letter in 2018 regarding the marketing of unapproved stem cell products, leading to the termination of their clinical registry and trials.
