Autologous adipose tissue stromal vascular fraction (SVF) is a cell-based biologic therapy developed by Translational Biosciences for the treatment of osteoarthritis. The therapy involves the extraction of adipose tissue from the patient (typically from the infraumbilical area), followed by the isolation of the stromal vascular fraction. This fraction contains a heterogeneous population of cells, including mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), pre-adipocytes, endothelial cells, and pericytes. The resulting cell suspension is administered via intra-articular injection into the knee joint. The therapeutic effect is driven by the regenerative and anti-inflammatory properties of these cells, which aim to promote cartilage repair and modulate the joint environment to reduce pain and improve function. Translational Biosciences evaluated this therapy in a Phase I/II clinical trial (NCT01885832) focusing on patients with moderate to severe knee osteoarthritis.
