Autologous adult human mesenchymal stem cells (specifically bone marrow-derived, BM-MSCs) are an investigational cell therapy developed by the Instituto de Investigación Biomédica de Salamanca (IBSAL) in collaboration with the Clínica Universidad de Navarra and other Spanish centers. This advanced therapy medicinal product (ATMP) involves the extraction of a patient's own bone marrow, followed by the expansion of mesenchymal stem cells under Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) conditions. The expanded cells are then administered via intra-articular injection into the knee. The therapy is designed to treat knee osteoarthritis by leveraging the immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and regenerative properties of MSCs, which aim to modify the joint microenvironment and promote cartilage repair. It has progressed to Phase III clinical trials in Spain, comparing its efficacy against allogeneic MSCs and hyaluronic acid.
