Overview

Autologous apheresis platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an investigational biologic therapy being evaluated for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia (AGA). This specific preparation utilizes automated apheresis technology—a closed-system blood cell separator—to concentrate platelets from the patient's own peripheral blood, ensuring a standardized and high-purity product compared to traditional manual centrifugation methods. Once injected intradermally or subcutaneously into the scalp, the PRP releases a concentrated milieu of growth factors, including platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). These factors act on hair follicle stem cells and dermal papilla cells to stimulate hair follicle regeneration, enhance local vascularization, and promote the transition of hair follicles from the telogen (resting) phase to the anagen (growth) phase. The therapy is currently being studied by developer Zhang Li in prospective clinical trials to assess its safety and efficacy in male patients with pattern hair loss.
