The autologous autovaccine is a patient-specific, autologous *Escherichia coli*-based biologic vaccine developed by SymbioVaccin (part of the Symbio Herborn Group) in Herborn, Germany. Prepared from non-pathogenic, patient-derived *E. coli* bacteria isolated from the patient's own fecal flora, the bacteria are processed and heat-inactivated to create a personalized immunotherapeutic agent. It is administered via subcutaneous injection on an incremental dosing schedule. The vaccine's mechanism of action involves stimulating a strong Th1-skewed immune response (including the modulation of immunoregulatory cytokines), which counteracts the Th2-skewed allergic immune response underlying conditions such as house dust mite allergy, allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, and bronchial asthma. It has been evaluated in a Phase 2 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled proof-of-concept trial in Germany (NCT00677209) measuring exhaled nitric oxide (eNO) as a surrogate marker of bronchial inflammation before and after bronchial house dust mite challenge.
