Overview

Autologous blood is a biological substance used as an endoscopic hemostatic agent for the management of actively bleeding gastroduodenal ulcers. In this clinical procedure, 5-20 cc of the patient's own blood is withdrawn and immediately injected into the submucosa at the edges of the ulcer. The therapeutic effect is achieved through mechanical tamponade, which compresses the bleeding vessel, and the localized activation of the coagulation cascade to form a stable fibrin clot. This technique has been investigated by Zagazig University in randomized controlled trials as an alternative to epinephrine injection, aiming to provide effective hemostasis while avoiding the systemic cardiovascular side effects associated with sympathomimetic agents.
