Autologous blood clot is a biological embolic agent prepared from a patient's own peripheral blood. It is utilized in interventional oncology, specifically during transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The clot is delivered via a catheter into the hepatic artery to provide temporary mechanical occlusion of the tumor's blood supply. This ischemia, combined with the localized delivery of chemotherapy, aims to induce tumor necrosis. Because it is autologous and susceptible to natural fibrinolysis, it is intended to be less permanent than synthetic agents like gelfoam or polyvinyl alcohol, potentially allowing for repeated treatments through the same arterial branches.
