Overview

Autologous blood injection is an investigational biologic therapy used as a submucosal cushion agent during endoscopic procedures, such as polypectomy and mucosal resection. In a Phase 2 clinical trial conducted by Johns Hopkins University, the patient's own whole blood is withdrawn and injected into the submucosal layer beneath gastrointestinal lesions, specifically large flat polyps. This creates a protective cushion that elevates the lesion, facilitating safer removal by protecting the underlying gastrointestinal wall from thermal injury and perforation. Autologous blood is hypothesized to provide a more durable cushion than normal saline and may offer intrinsic hemostatic benefits to prevent post-polypectomy bleeding.
