Overview

Autologous bone marrow aspirate (BMA) is a regenerative orthobiologic therapy harvested from a patient's own bone marrow, most commonly from the posterior iliac crest. It contains a heterogeneous mixture of nucleated cells, including mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), hematopoietic stem cells, and endothelial progenitor cells, alongside a rich concentration of growth factors (such as TGF-β, BMP-2, and BMP-7) and cytokines. BMA is used primarily in orthopedic and musculoskeletal applications to promote tissue healing, cartilage repair, and bone regeneration. It is often processed at the point-of-care using centrifugation to create bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC), which increases the density of therapeutic progenitor cells. The therapy exerts its effects through direct differentiation into target tissues (osteogenesis, chondrogenesis) and via paracrine signaling that modulates inflammation and stimulates local vascularization.
