Overview

This autologous bone marrow-based cell therapy was developed by Dr. Evangelos V. Badiavas at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine for the treatment of chronic, non-healing wounds. The intervention involves harvesting bone marrow aspirate from the patient's own tibia, which contains a heterogeneous population of cells including mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and other bone marrow-derived progenitor cells. The therapy can be administered as fresh bone marrow aspirate, ex vivo cultured and expanded bone marrow cells, or a combination of both. Administration is typically performed topically to the wound bed or via injection into the wound periphery. The biological mechanism of action relies on the ability of these stem and progenitor cells to differentiate into various skin structures, promote angiogenesis (the formation of new blood vessels), and provide anti-inflammatory signaling to restart the healing process in recalcitrant wounds such as diabetic, venous, and arterial ulcers.
