Overview

Autologous bone marrow-derived cell therapy is an experimental regenerative treatment developed by the Hospital de Clínicas Dr. Manuel Quintela in Uruguay for chronic venous leg ulcers. The procedure involves harvesting bone marrow from the patient's posterior iliac crest, which is then processed to concentrate bone marrow total nucleated cells (BM-TNCs) and CD34+ hematopoietic stem cells. This cell concentrate is administered via multiple perilesional injections directly into the edges of the venous leg ulcer. The therapy aims to promote wound healing in patients who have not responded to standard care by leveraging the ability of stem cells to secrete pro-angiogenic cytokines and growth factors, thereby stimulating tissue repair and reducing wound pain. Clinical pilot studies have indicated that the treatment is safe and can significantly reduce ulcer size and associated pain.
