Autologous bone marrow-derived endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) are a cell-based therapy involving the extraction of progenitor cells from a patient's own bone marrow, followed by their isolation, expansion, or differentiation *ex vivo* before re-administration. EPCs are a subset of bone marrow cells capable of migrating to sites of vascular injury or ischemia. Once localized, they promote neovascularization and tissue repair both by direct integration into the vascular endothelium and through the paracrine secretion of pro-angiogenic growth factors such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). This therapy is primarily investigated for its potential to improve liver function and reduce portal hypertension in patients with advanced liver cirrhosis, as well as for treating cardiovascular diseases and promoting bone regeneration in conditions like osteonecrosis.
