Autologous bone marrow-derived human mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) are a type of multipotent stem cell harvested from a patient's own bone marrow, expanded ex vivo, and then re-administered. In the context of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), these cells are being investigated for their neuroprotective and immunomodulatory properties. Developed by Nipro Corporation, the therapy involves multiple intravenous (IV) administrations. The mechanism is thought to involve the secretion of neurotrophic factors (such as VEGF, HGF, and IGF-1) and the modulation of the inflammatory environment in the central nervous system, potentially slowing the progression of motor neuron degeneration.
