This is an investigational autologous cell therapy developed by Tehran University of Medical Sciences for the treatment of moderate bilateral knee osteoarthritis. The therapy utilizes mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) harvested from the patient's own bone marrow (typically from the iliac crest). These cells are isolated, cultured, and expanded ex vivo before being re-administered via intra-articular injection into the affected knee joint. The mechanism of action relies on the multi-lineage potential of MSCs to promote cartilage repair, their ability to secrete bioactive factors that modulate the inflammatory synovial environment, and their immunosuppressive activities. Clinical evaluation, including a Phase 1 pilot study (NCT00550524), has focused on assessing the safety and preliminary efficacy of this protocol in improving pain and joint function.
