Overview

This is an investigational autologous cell therapy consisting of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) developed by the Ain Shams University Maternity Hospital for the treatment of female stress urinary incontinence (SUI) caused by intrinsic sphincter deficiency. The therapy involves harvesting a patient's own bone marrow, isolating and expanding the mesenchymal stem cells, and then re-injecting them periurethrally into the submucosal tissue of the proximal urethra. The mechanism of action relies on the regenerative potential of MSCs, which can undergo self-renewal and differentiate into muscle cells to repair and strengthen the damaged urethral sphincter muscle. A Phase 3 clinical trial (NCT02334878) has compared the efficacy of these stem cell injections against the standard surgical treatment, tension-free vaginal tape (TVT).
