Autologous bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) are an experimental cell therapy investigated by Arda Kiani for the treatment of emphysema. This therapeutic approach involves the extraction of mesenchymal stem cells from the patient's own bone marrow, followed by their expansion and subsequent delivery directly into the lungs via endobronchial transplantation (bronchoscopy). MSCs are known for their multipotent differentiation potential and significant immunomodulatory properties. In the context of emphysema, a condition characterized by the destruction of alveolar walls and chronic inflammation, these cells are intended to home to damaged lung tissue and secrete paracrine factors that suppress inflammatory responses and stimulate endogenous repair mechanisms of the lung parenchyma.
