Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Autologous bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) is an investigational cell therapy developed by Lu Debin at the Third Military Medical University for the treatment of newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes mellitus. The therapy involves the extraction, expansion, and intravenous re-infusion of a patient's own bone marrow-derived MSCs. These cells are intended to provide a dual therapeutic effect: controlling the autoimmune response that destroys insulin-producing cells and facilitating the preservation or replacement of pancreatic β-cells. The therapy has been evaluated in a Phase 2/3 clinical trial (NCT01157403) to assess its safety and efficacy in maintaining endogenous insulin production and reducing exogenous insulin requirements.
