Overview

Autologous bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) are an investigational cell therapy developed by Assiut University for the treatment of decompensated liver cirrhosis. The therapeutic process involves harvesting bone marrow from the patient, followed by the isolation, propagation, and potential trans-differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells into hepatocyte-like cells in a laboratory setting. These cells are then infused into the patient's portal vein under ultrasound guidance. The mechanism of action involves the cells' ability to migrate to damaged liver tissue, where they may replace lost hepatocytes and secrete paracrine factors that modulate the inflammatory environment and reduce hepatic fibrosis, thereby improving overall liver function. This approach is being explored as a regenerative alternative to liver transplantation for end-stage liver pathologies.
