This is an investigational autologous cell therapy consisting of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) derived from the patient's own bone marrow, developed and studied by the Germans Trias i Pujol Hospital. The therapy is primarily indicated for relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS). The treatment process involves harvesting bone marrow from the patient, expanding the MSCs in a controlled culture environment, and then re-administering the cells via intravenous infusion. The mechanism of action is multifaceted, involving immunomodulation to suppress the autoimmune inflammatory response that damages the central nervous system, as well as potential neuroprotective effects through the secretion of various growth and neurotrophic factors that may promote tissue repair and remyelination.
