Overview

This investigational autologous cell therapy consists of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) derived from the patient's own bone marrow. Developed by the Tehran University of Medical Sciences, it was evaluated in a Phase 1 pilot study (NCT00550498) for the treatment of refractory ocular manifestations of Behcet's disease, specifically retinal vasculitis. The therapy involves harvesting bone marrow, expanding the mononuclear cells ex vivo through repeated passages, and administering the final cell product via intravitreal injection. The therapeutic rationale is based on the immunomodulatory and tissue-repair properties of MSCs, which are intended to modulate the inflammatory immune response and promote repair of ocular lesions in patients who have failed conventional immunosuppressive treatments.
