Overview

This investigational cell therapy involves autologous bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) administered via direct intramyocardial injection. Developed by Dr. Joshua M. Hare at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, the therapy is specifically designed for patients with chronic ischemic left ventricular dysfunction undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). The treatment aims to improve cardiac structure and function by reducing myocardial fibrosis and promoting neoangiogenesis (new blood vessel formation) and neomyogenesis (new heart muscle formation). The therapy was evaluated in the Phase I/II PROMETHEUS trial, which was suspended after enrolling a small number of patients due to slow accrual.
