Overview

This experimental autologous cell therapy, developed by researchers at the University of São Paulo's Ribeirão Preto Medical School, involves the intravitreal injection of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) derived from the patient's own bone marrow. Investigated primarily for advanced primary open-angle glaucoma, the therapy aims to provide neuroprotection to retinal ganglion cells. The mechanism of action is attributed to paracrine effects, where the transplanted MSCs secrete various neurotrophic factors, including brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), to support cell survival and potentially restore function in the optic nerve. It is currently being evaluated in Phase I clinical safety trials.
