Overview

This is an investigational autologous cell therapy developed by Yonsei University College of Medicine for the treatment of multiple system atrophy (MSA), specifically the cerebellar type (MSA-C). The therapy utilizes mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) derived from the patient's own bone marrow, which are expanded in vitro and then administered back to the patient through a combination of intra-arterial and intravenous infusions. The mechanism of action is thought to involve the secretion of various neurotrophic and anti-inflammatory factors that provide neuroprotection and potentially stimulate regenerative processes in degenerating brain regions. Clinical evaluation in Phase 1 and Phase 2 trials has focused on assessing safety and efficacy using the Unified Multiple System Atrophy Rating Scale (UMSARS) and neuroimaging markers such as cerebral glucose metabolism and gray matter density.
