Overview

This investigational cell therapy, developed by Dr. Aditya K Aggarwal and colleagues, is a combination of autologous bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) for the treatment of early-stage knee osteoarthritis. The therapeutic process involves aspirating bone marrow from the patient, followed by the isolation and culture-expansion of MSCs that are characterized by the presence of CD90 and CD105 markers and the absence of CD45 and CD34. These expanded cells are then administered via intra-articular injection into the affected knee joint in combination with PRP. The therapy is designed to leverage the regenerative potential and paracrine signaling of MSCs, which are further enhanced by the growth factors present in PRP, to alleviate pain, reduce joint stiffness, and potentially improve the integrity of articular cartilage as a disease-modifying intervention.
