Overview

Autologous bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (BM-MSCs) are an investigational cell therapy developed by the Royan Institute for the treatment of Kienböck's disease, also known as avascular necrosis of the lunate bone. The therapeutic approach involves the extraction of a patient's own bone marrow, followed by the isolation and expansion of mesenchymal stromal cells in a laboratory setting. These cells are then transplanted back into the patient's lunate bone, typically in conjunction with a core decompression surgical procedure. The mechanism of action relies on the regenerative potential of MSCs, which are thought to promote revascularization and osteogenesis (bone formation) within the necrotic bone tissue, thereby halting disease progression and improving wrist function.
