Autologous bone marrow-derived mononuclear cells (BMMNCs) are a heterogeneous population of cells, including hematopoietic stem cells, mesenchymal stem cells, and endothelial progenitor cells, harvested from the patient's own bone marrow. In the context of intellectual disability (formerly referred to as mental retardation), these cells are being investigated by Chaitanya Hospital, Pune, for their potential to promote neuroregeneration and improve cognitive function. The treatment involves the extraction of bone marrow, isolation of the mononuclear fraction, and subsequent intravenous re-infusion into the patient. The hypothesized mechanism involves the release of neurotrophic factors, modulation of inflammation, and potential stimulation of endogenous repair mechanisms in the brain.
