Autologous bone marrow-derived mononuclear cells (ABM-MNCs) is an experimental cell-based therapy developed by the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. The procedure involves harvesting 200-300 ml of bone marrow from the patient, separating the mononuclear cell fraction using density gradient centrifugation, and re-infusing the cells, typically via the superior pancreaticoduodenal artery or peripheral intravenous infusion. The therapy aims to improve pancreatic β-cell function and insulin sensitivity, potentially reducing the requirement for exogenous insulin in patients with long-standing disease who have failed multiple oral antidiabetic drugs.
