Overview

Autologous bone marrow-derived mononuclear stem cells (BM-MNC) are a heterogeneous population of cells harvested from a patient's own bone marrow, containing hematopoietic stem cells, mesenchymal stem cells, and endothelial progenitor cells. Developed by Novo Cellular Medicine Institute LLP, this cell therapy was investigated for the treatment of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) in a Phase I/II clinical trial (NCT01373528). The treatment protocol involved the administration of these cells via intrathecal and intravenous routes, often in conjunction with "liberation therapy"—a surgical procedure involving balloon angioplasty of the internal jugular and/or azygos veins intended to address chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency (CCSVI). The therapeutic rationale is based on the cells' ability to migrate to sites of injury, modulate the immune response by secreting anti-inflammatory cytokines, and provide neurotrophic support to promote myelin repair and neuroprotection.
