Overview

Autologous bone marrow-derived nucleated cells (BMCs) is an investigational cell therapy consisting of a patient's own unfractionated nucleated bone marrow cells, which include various stem and progenitor cell populations. The therapy involves harvesting bone marrow from the patient, followed by intracoronary infusion into the infarcted myocardium. The primary therapeutic objective is to promote cardiac repair, enhance left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), and mitigate adverse left ventricular remodeling following an acute ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). This approach was rigorously evaluated in the BOOST and BOOST-2 clinical trials, which were primarily led by academic investigators in Germany and Norway. However, the BOOST-2 trial, a randomized, double-blind, multicenter study, did not demonstrate a significant improvement in LVEF compared to placebo in patients receiving modern standard-of-care percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and pharmacological therapy.
