Autologous bone marrow-derived stem cells are a form of cell therapy in which a patient's own (autologous) stem cells are harvested from their bone marrow, minimally manipulated or processed as needed, and then reintroduced into the same patient. These preparations typically contain a heterogeneous mix of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), mesenchymal stromal/stem cell precursors (MSCs), and endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs). The primary mechanism is to restore or regenerate damaged tissues by providing new blood-forming and/or tissue-regenerating capacity. This approach is most commonly used in hematologic malignancies such as multiple myeloma, lymphoma, and leukemia following high-dose chemotherapy or radiation therapy to rescue the blood-forming system[1][3][5]. It is also being investigated for regenerative medicine applications including cardiac repair after myocardial infarction and reproductive medicine for conditions like Asherman's syndrome[6][7]. The process involves collection via direct aspiration from the bone marrow or mobilization into peripheral blood followed by apheresis. After storage/processing, the collected stem cell product is infused back into the patient.
