This investigational cell-based therapy involves the intrapancreatic infusion of autologous bone marrow-derived stem cells in combination with hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Developed by Dr. Rodolfo Alejandro at the University of Miami in collaboration with Stem Cell Argentina, the protocol utilizes the patient's own harvested bone marrow stem cells, which are delivered directly into the pancreatic arterial supply. The treatment is supplemented by multiple sessions of hyperbaric oxygen therapy both before and after the infusion to enhance cell homing, survival, and islet function. Clinical trials have demonstrated potential improvements in metabolic control, including reduced HbA1c levels and decreased insulin requirements, by potentially promoting pancreatic regeneration or improving the local microenvironment.
