Autologous bone marrow-derived stem cells (BMSCs) developed by TCA Cellular Therapy are a type of cell therapy investigated for the treatment of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). The therapy involves harvesting a patient's own bone marrow, isolating the stem cell fraction (which typically includes mesenchymal stem cells and other mononuclear cells), and re-administering them via intrathecal injection. The therapeutic rationale is primarily based on paracrine signaling, where the transplanted cells secrete various neurotrophic factors and anti-inflammatory cytokines. These factors, including BDNF, GDNF, and VEGF, aim to create a neuroprotective microenvironment that supports the survival of degenerating motor neurons and modulates neuroinflammation within the central nervous system. A Phase I clinical trial was conducted to evaluate the safety and preliminary efficacy of this approach in slowing disease progression in ALS patients.
