Overview

This autologous cell therapy consists of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) derived from a patient's own bone marrow, currently under investigation by the Apeiron Research Center in collaboration with the University of Colorado Boulder for the treatment of Parkinson's disease and atypical parkinsonism (Parkinson-Plus Syndrome). The therapeutic process involves harvesting bone marrow aspirate from the patient's pelvis, isolating and concentrating the MSCs in a specialized laboratory, and re-administering them through a combination of intranasal (aerosolized) and intravenous routes. The biological mechanism is centered on the cells' ability to modulate immune responses, secrete anti-inflammatory and neurotrophic factors, and potentially promote tissue repair or replace damaged neurons within the central nervous system to mitigate neurodegeneration.
