Autologous bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) are an investigational cell therapy being evaluated by investigator Jie Shen for the treatment of diabetic foot and peripheral vascular disease. The therapeutic process involves the extraction of stem cells from the patient's own bone marrow, followed by processing and reinjection into the affected limb. These cells are hypothesized to address diabetes-related vascular complications by promoting angiogenesis (the formation of new blood vessels) and providing immunomodulatory effects. By secreting various paracrine factors, such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and other cytokines, the cells help restore blood flow to ischemic tissues and facilitate the healing of chronic diabetic ulcers.
