Overview

Autologous bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy is a cell-based biologic being developed by Stem Med Pte. Ltd. for the treatment of liver cirrhosis, particularly for patients with Child-Pugh class B or C. The treatment process involves harvesting 100-200ml of bone marrow from the patient, isolating and culturing the mesenchymal stem cells ex vivo, and then reinfusing the expanded cells back into the patient. The therapeutic effect is driven by the MSCs' multi-pronged mechanism, which includes differentiating into functional hepatocytes, secreting paracrine factors to stimulate endogenous liver cell regeneration, reducing hepatic fibrosis, and exerting immunomodulatory effects to stabilize the liver microenvironment. This therapy aims to improve liver function and extend survival as a potential alternative to liver transplantation for patients with decompensated cirrhosis.
