Overview

Autologous bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cells are multipotent, non-hematopoietic cells isolated from a patient's own bone marrow. These cells provide crucial support to the bone marrow microenvironment, regulate hematopoietic stem/progenitor cell homeostasis, and can differentiate into skeletal, connective, and adipose tissue lineages. In clinical settings, autologous BM-MSCs are used for their regenerative and immunomodulatory properties, and have demonstrated potential in facilitating tissue repair and modulating immune responses. They have shown utility in conditions such as osteoarthritis, spinal cord injury, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), multiple sclerosis, and in the setting of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. The mechanism of action includes secretion of anti-inflammatory and trophic factors, modulation of local immune responses, support of endogenous stem cells, and promotion of tissue regeneration. The therapy is manufactured on a per-patient basis and involves harvesting bone marrow, isolating and expanding MSCs, and administering them directly or via injection[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8].
