Autologous bone marrow mononuclear cell (BMMNC) therapy is a regenerative cell-based treatment developed by the NeuroGen Brain and Spine Institute for patients with cerebral palsy. The procedure involves harvesting a patient's own bone marrow, isolating the mononuclear cell fraction (which includes hematopoietic stem cells, mesenchymal stem cells, and endothelial progenitor cells), and administering these cells intrathecally. The therapeutic effect is believed to be mediated through paracrine mechanisms, where the transplanted cells secrete various neurotrophic factors such as brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), nerve growth factor (NGF), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). These factors promote neuroprotection, stimulate angiogenesis, reduce neuroinflammation, and facilitate neurogenesis and synaptic plasticity. Clinical trials conducted by NeuroGen have demonstrated significant improvements in motor function, muscle tone, and quality of life, often supported by metabolic changes observed in PET-CT imaging.
