This is an investigational autologous cell therapy consisting of bone marrow-derived mononuclear cells (BM-MNCs) being developed by Red de Terapia Celular for the treatment of retinitis pigmentosa. The therapy involves the extraction of the patient's own bone marrow, isolation of the mononuclear cell fraction—which contains a heterogeneous population of progenitor cells—and subsequent delivery via intravitreal injection. The biological mechanism is hypothesized to involve the secretion of various paracrine factors that exert neuroprotective and anti-apoptotic effects on degenerating retinal photoreceptors, potentially slowing the progression of vision loss. It is currently being evaluated in Phase I clinical trials to assess safety and tolerability in patients with advanced retinitis pigmentosa.
