Autologous bone marrow mononuclear cells (BMMNCs) are a cell therapy product developed and utilized by the Global Stem Cell Center in Baghdad for the treatment of avascular necrosis of the femoral head (AVN). This therapeutic approach involves the aspiration of bone marrow from the patient's iliac crest, followed by the isolation of the mononuclear cell fraction through density gradient centrifugation. This fraction contains a heterogeneous population of cells, including mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), hematopoietic stem cells, and endothelial progenitor cells. The concentrated cells are then injected percutaneously into the necrotic lesion of the femoral head, typically in conjunction with core decompression surgery. The mechanism of action is based on the ability of these progenitor cells to promote revascularization (angiogenesis) and bone remodeling (osteogenesis) within the ischemic bone tissue, thereby potentially halting the progression of the disease and preventing femoral head collapse.
