Autologous bone marrow mononuclear cells (BMMNCs) is an investigational cell therapy developed by the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, for the treatment of subacute ischemic stroke. The procedure involves the extraction of mononuclear cells from the patient's own bone marrow, which are then processed and delivered via intraarterial infusion into the middle cerebral artery (MCA) within 15 days of the stroke event. The therapeutic rationale is based on the cells' ability to migrate to the site of injury and exert paracrine effects that promote angiogenesis, neurogenesis, and immunomodulation, potentially reducing the volume of the infarct and improving functional outcomes.
