Autologous bone marrow mononuclear cells (BM-MNCs) are a heterogeneous population of cells, including hematopoietic stem cells, mesenchymal stem cells, and endothelial progenitor cells, harvested from a patient's own bone marrow. Developed by the Andalusian Initiative for Advanced Therapies for the treatment of acute ischemic stroke, these cells are administered intra-arterially to the affected brain region. The therapeutic effect is primarily attributed to paracrine mechanisms, where the cells secrete various neurotrophic, angiogenic, and anti-inflammatory factors that promote neuroprotection, stimulate revascularization, and modulate the immune response to injury, thereby potentially improving functional recovery in stroke patients.
