Overview

This investigational cell therapy, developed by researchers at the University of São Paulo (specifically at the School of Medicine of Ribeirão Preto), involves the intravitreal injection of autologous bone marrow-derived mononuclear cells (BM-MNCs) for the treatment of ischemic retinopathy, including severe diabetic retinopathy. The therapy utilizes a patient's own bone marrow, which is processed to isolate a mononuclear fraction containing hematopoietic stem cells and CD34+ progenitor cells. Unlike therapies aimed at direct cell replacement, this approach relies on paracrine mechanisms, where the injected cells secrete a variety of neurotrophic and angiogenic factors. These factors are intended to provide trophic support to damaged retinal tissue, promote microvascular stability, and prevent further neurodegeneration. The therapy has been evaluated in Phase 1/2 clinical trials (NCT01518842) to assess safety and preliminary efficacy in improving visual function in patients with retinal ischemia.
