Autologous bone marrow progenitor cell therapy is an investigational cell-based treatment developed by Dr. Amit Patel for the treatment of advanced heart failure. The procedure involves harvesting progenitor cells from the patient's own bone marrow (typically from the hip bone) and injecting them directly into the myocardium (intramyocardial injection). This therapy is specifically being evaluated in patients undergoing the implantation of a ventricular assist device (VAD) as a bridge to heart transplantation. The mechanism of action is thought to involve the release of paracrine factors that promote angiogenesis, reduce apoptosis, and potentially stimulate endogenous cardiac repair mechanisms, thereby improving myocardial function in failing heart tissue. The clinical protocol allows for the histological examination of the heart after it is removed during a transplant operation to assess microscopic changes at the injection site.
