Overview

Autologous c-kit+ cardiac progenitor cells (CPCs) are a cell-based biologic therapy investigated for the treatment of heart failure resulting from chronic ischemic cardiomyopathy. These cells are isolated from the patient's own heart tissue, expanded ex vivo, and then re-administered via transendocardial injection. The therapeutic mechanism is primarily attributed to paracrine signaling that promotes cardiac repair and regeneration, rather than direct differentiation into new cardiomyocytes. The development of this therapy was notably evaluated in the Phase II CONCERT-HF trial, which was coordinated by The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). The trial assessed these cells both as a monotherapy and in combination with mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs).
