Overview

Autologous CD133+ cells are a cell-based therapeutic consisting of progenitor cells isolated from a patient's own bone marrow. CD133 (prominin-1) is a glycoprotein marker for primitive hematopoietic stem cells and endothelial progenitor cells. In clinical applications for cardiovascular disease, these cells are typically enriched using magnetic cell separation technology (such as the CliniMACS system) and then delivered via intramyocardial injection. The therapeutic rationale is that these cells promote neoangiogenesis and myocardial repair through paracrine signaling and potential differentiation into vascular or cardiac lineages, thereby improving cardiac function in patients with chronic ischemic heart disease or following myocardial infarction.
