Overview

Autologous CD133+ cells are an investigational stem cell therapy consisting of a subpopulation of hematopoietic and endothelial progenitor cells isolated from a patient's own bone marrow or mobilized peripheral blood. These cells are identified by the expression of the CD133 (Prominin-1) surface glycoprotein, a marker for immature somatic stem cells. The therapy is designed to promote tissue regeneration and angiogenesis (neovascularization) in damaged or ischemic tissues, primarily through the paracrine secretion of pro-angiogenic factors like Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF). Clinical investigations have spanned cardiovascular diseases (myocardial infarction, refractory angina), critical limb ischemia, liver cirrhosis, and endometrial conditions like Asherman's Syndrome. The therapy has received Orphan Drug Designation from the FDA and EMA for the treatment of Asherman's Syndrome.
