Overview

Autologous CD19-targeted chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy is an investigational cell therapy developed by the Vinmec Research Institute of Stem Cell and Gene Technology for the treatment of refractory systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The therapy involves collecting a patient's own T cells via leukapheresis, genetically engineering them ex vivo to express a CAR specific to the CD19 antigen—a marker found on the surface of B cells—and then re-infusing the expanded cells into the patient following lymphodepleting chemotherapy. By targeting and depleting CD19-positive B cells, which are responsible for producing the pathogenic autoantibodies in SLE, the treatment aims to achieve a deep and potentially durable "immune reset" in patients who have failed standard immunosuppressive therapies.
