Overview

Autologous cerebrospinal fluid (aCSF) is a patient-derived biologic fluid harvested via lumbar puncture and reintroduced to the same patient for therapeutic or diagnostic purposes. It is primarily utilized as a highly biocompatible suspension medium for the delivery of cell therapies, such as mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in the treatment of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Additionally, it is used as a convective infusate in convection-enhanced delivery (CED) protocols to enhance the visualization of deep brain structures like the basal ganglia during MRI-guided neurosurgery for Parkinson's disease. Its use minimizes the risk of immunological rejection and inflammation compared to synthetic vehicles. Experimental applications also include inducing thymus-mediated immune tolerance to brain antigens following surgical brain injury.
