Autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI) by Cryopraxis is a cell-based tissue-engineered therapy designed to repair focal articular cartilage defects in the joint, typically the knee. The process involves harvesting a small biopsy of healthy cartilage from a non-weight-bearing area of the patient's joint. These chondrocytes are then isolated and expanded ex vivo in a laboratory setting to increase their population. In a second surgical procedure, the expanded cells are implanted into the cartilage defect, often secured under a periosteal patch or a collagen membrane. Once implanted, the chondrocytes produce new hyaline-like cartilage matrix, restoring the structural integrity and function of the articular surface.
